A meritocratic education system is one that entrust reward infantren for their hard work and ability, ground on their efforts. This leads to a better quality of life as they are apt(predicate) to countenance good jobs, with better financial security. (Browne 2002). During the 20th century different Acts have been established to try and pretend a meritocratic education system. In 1944 The Education Act was introduced. It aimed to provide equality of luck for all young people (Haralambos & Holborn 2008). The rail day release age was raised to 15 and the tripartite system was introduced. At the age of 11, children sat a test to determine which school would best suit their individual ability. Grammar schools were for the more able students. expert schools were for the more technically minded and the secondary modern schools were for students that would go on to practical and manual jobs.
This system intended to create a fairer society and open up opportunities for the working class. It was based on the principle of equality of educational opportunity in a meritocratic society (Browne 2002).
The tripartite system worked in some ways but failed in others. Children that were placed in secondary modern schools were labelled by society as the not very bright children. The individual teacher expectations and the school educational expectation were low. If you scored low in the test and went a secondary modern school teachers would not expect you to be very academic. Self-fulfilling prophecy occurred for many children.
