In A Rose for Emily, Miss Emily progresses from a small lady to a 70 year old. She is controlled by her father until his death and presumably beyond his grave. Miss Emily was trapped in the past in a time when change was constant. She lived in a time when industrialization was taking off, and farming was not as predominant as it used to be.



This changes can be seen in the story when the town goes from a place where there were beautiful houses at one point to being covered with garages and gasoline pumps. Miss Emily was exempted from compensable taxes after her father died, because she was left with postal code exclusively a house and she was considered an aristocrat at the time, Colonel Sartoris exempted her from paying taxes to help her out since she was left with no money. After the brand-new generation of politicians came into town they tried to get her to pay taxes but she refused to do so.
